hyperpronating vs supinating

Post a new topicby Guest on Fri Nov 02, 2001 8:38 pm

I'm a little confused..maybe you can help me. I had been running 6 miles a day for about 4 months, when out of the blue I began to have a lot of knee pain/swelling. I followed the R.I.C.E recommendations and the symptoms went away. As a precaution I made an appointment with an orthopedic doctor. The doctor examined me and took x-rays. He determined that I had not torn or seriously injured anything, but that I had tendinitis type symptoms in my knees. He also told me that I hyperpronate. Everything I have read and models I have seen picturing hyperpronation show the heels worn on the inside (they say that looking at worn heels of your shoes is a good way of determining how you pronate). I am confused because all of the worn heels on my shoes are worn on the outside (as if my feet lean outward not inward). Would you say that I supinate instead? The doctor kept confusing the two terms when I was in the office, so I was wondering if he confused my diagnosis. I would think that I supinate from what I have seen and read. I did get orthodics made for my shoes and I am buying running shoes with pronation control. I don't think my diagnosis matters that much anyway, because either way I needed orthodics and different sneakers to correct my problem, but I am curious if you would say I supinate or hyperpronate. Also, do you have any other recommendations for me? Thank you for your time.

It does sound like you supinate more than you hyperpronate. If you want to know for sure, wet your foot and then step on a piece of colored paper. If the inside area of your arch does not wet the paper, it means you have an arch and probably do not hyperpronate.
