Injury to Inferior Extensor Retinaculum (I think)

Post a new topicby Guest on Thu Jul 19, 2001 7:23 pm

I've been running for several years. Approximately 6 weeks ago I experienced intense pain around my foot below the ankle after a run. X-ray is negative for fracture. The pain went away completely and I began running again after 3 weeks. After 5 or 6 miles I experience mild pain that usually goes away after "RICE". However, four days ago I ran 8 miles and the pain is not improving. I can walk easily in a shoe with a 1 1/2 inch heel because the muscle does not completely contract, but am having difficulty in a flat shoe and bare feet, especially climbing steps. I looked at a chart that led me to believe I've injured the inferior extensor retinaculum. Nice to know, I guess, but what do I do about it?

The problem is more likely in the tibialis anterior tendon and the extensor digitorim longus. You probably have tendinitis in these two tendons. Therefore, you need to see a podiatrist so your feet can be examined. Also, if you just changed your sneaker when this started to occur, you may want to consider this as a cause to the pain. Good luck and please write back if you have any further questions.
