lymphedema

Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Jun 03, 2001 12:12 pm

I diagnosed as having lymphedema, a disease characerized by extreme swelling in my left ankle foot. since diagnosis, i have undergone treatment (baging massaging) has proved ineffective in reducing swelling. Prior to diagnosis from a vascular surgeon i told by a podiatrist swelling in my left foot could be attried to tarsel tunnel syndrome. After perming nerve conduction tests, however, podiatrist determined n't sce of my problem. Given I ran track approx 12yrs (throughout high school college), I'm curious as to wher i have lymphedema or a track related injury. I a triple jumper ree lots of stress placed on my legs lower back. i have suffered several hamstring lower back injuries, sprains, stress fractures ree it's hard me to believe my swelling is simply a congenital disease. i do not feel confident in diagnosis ree i wonder if could provide some insight. fyi: swelling began when i 16 has gotten progressively worse. i am now 25. thanks!

Lymphedema is not due to running track. It is a serious disease though so you may want to get a second opinion to make sure the diagnosis is correct. If you do have lymphedema, there are treatments like compression stockings and pumps that can help keep the edema out of the leg. There are also some surgeries that can be performed but they should only be done by a specialist. Therefore, you should make sure you have the best possible doctors taking care of you. Good luck and please write back if you have any further questions.

I have experienced a similar problem. While playing volleyball, basketball, running track in high school and just being really active, I started having swelling in my left ankle. Went to the doctor once who told my parents and I that nothing was wrong. I ran cross country in college and the problem existed then too. Just elevated it and iced it as needed, but that doesn't seem to be enough anymore. Needless to say the swelling has not improved. Need to go to the doctor but afraid of what they might say. Thanks for your post as it helps to know there are others out there with similar issues.
