Shin Splints

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon Apr 29, 2002 6:15 pm

I have been diagnosed with shin splints in the past. I just started running again and they have come back. In the Army they gave me 800mg of motrin for the pain. People have told me that it is not good to use it as it will inhibit recovery of my muscles and I wont get any stronger or better at running. The pain hurts so bad sometimes I cant stand it and I know its not a stress fracture. What should I do? Quiting running is not an option because Im still in the military. Also is it true motrin will inhibit my growth in weight lifting? Please help, Matthew Ochsner

There are studies that show that high doses of ibuprofen can lead to a slowing of healing. Therefore, it could slow strengthening somewhat as well. First, you should get orthotics because they can dramatically help shin splints. Also, you could ask for a prescription for Vioxx or Celebrex which do not have the same effect on healing supposedly.
