traumatic toenail seperationi recently had an accident where my big toe got stubbed so hard that the nail is very loose and will probably come off. my toe is not severely traumatized except that the nail is pretty much ripped from the underlying tissue. should i tape the nail down and will it will reattach to the underlying toe? should i loosen it the rest of the way so it will fall off? it will be real tender if i do that and im worried it wont be protected. how should i help it heal? how long should i let the nail remain in place, until it falls off by itself? thank you
Re: traumatic toenail seperationThe nail should be removed because it could cause and infection. However, you should have this done by a podiatrist. It needs to be removed and then the nail bed needs to be checked for lacerations and if there is any exposed bone in the area. Furtehrmore, the podiatrist needs to make sure there is not any nail left in the area and that there is no infection at this time. You should see a podiatrist before you get a severe infection.
