advice on sesamoidectomy/re-fusionHi everyone,
Five years ago I had a bunion surgery that went pretty badly - lots of post-op infections. Five years later I've had 5 foot surgeries including a fusion of the first MTP. I've been infection free for 2 years but the fusion didn't heal well - my toe is higher than it should be off the ground; consequently, my fibular sesamoid bears the brunt of walking and is extremely painful even with orthotics My new surgeon recommended removing the sesamoid and re-breaking and setting the big toe to essentially refuse it. This may be a silly question but since my toe probably still won't reach the ground and I'll no longer have the bone there to help support walking, how exactly will walking work? He's not putting anything in to fill the place of sesamoid so I'm a little confused about the mechanics of it! Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated, like will recovery be more painful or longer than after the first fusion since they are also removing this bone? Even though this is the right decision to help alleviate some of the chronic pain and to help with function I'm still pretty scared. The thought of another surgery and long recovery time is depressing. Thanks!
