Fibular Sesamoid Fracture

Post a new topicby Guest on Thu Aug 29, 2002 12:09 pm

Over a year and a half ago, I fractured my fibular sesamoid
I was an active, 42 yr old woman with RA
Walking was my main form of aerobic exercise.
Since this injury and subsequent resting in a camwalker for 8 weeks, I've had nothing but problems.

I'm terrified of surgery due to health problems AND the possible outcome of hallux valgus. (sp)

I have a deep ache in that foot that now runs up the back of my calf.
Sometimes the big toe is very cold.

What is the percentage of risk of surgery? What do you normally reccommend to patients who want to walk for exercise?
I'm depressed because the one exercise I was able to do without much stress to my joints has been severely curtailed.
Thanks for any help you may offer.
Sincerely,
K.

The finular sesamoid can be removed very easily and shoudl help reduce teh pain tremendously. Also, removing the fibular sesamoid has a lower degree of complications such as hallux valgus versus removing the tibial sesamoid. Therefore, if this is the cause of teh problem,I would consider surgery. However, the fact that your toe is cold concerns me. There is a chance you may have raynaud's condition or CRPS. Therefore, you should discuss these with your doctor.

Dear Dr.
I do have raynauds. What is CRPS?
The foot dr I saw also mentioned that because of the break, circulation to the toe might be a problem.
Does the fact I have raynauds (as well as numerous autoimmune problems) make the surgery a problem in some way?
Thank you,
K.

Surgery could cause the pain to worsen if you do have CRPS. You can read more about CRPS under the conditions section of www.podiatrychannel.com. I would suggest not having surgery until you are fully evaluated and diagnosed.
