How accurate is an MRI for sesamoid fracture

Post a new topicby sore feet on Wed Oct 03, 2007 3:57 pm

I recently went to a foot Dr with pain in the ball of my foot, and after taking an Xray of my foot she said that I had a fracture and put me in a boot. Since she seemed a little inexperienced, I went to another Dr who took an xray and didn't see a fracture. He sent me for an MRI. He just called to say that the MRI came back and did not show a fracture, although it did show some arthritis in one of the sesamoids. How accurate is a MRI for showing fractures? I have only been wearing the boot for 3 1/2 weeks, so the bone probably wouldn't have heeled--or is this a bad assumption on my part? If the MRI shows no fracture it is safe to say that I have sesamoiditis and treat it as such? Why would she think that it was fractured if it wasn't?

Thanks for any help you can give me.
