lateral sesamoidectomyWhat are the risks I need to consider before having a lateral sesamoidectomy?I understand a medial sesamoidectomy could have more complications. Do you know what the success rate is? How many people are pain free afterwards and for how long? Also, how long is the recovery period?
Thank you so much for your opinion! Your website is a huge help for all of us in pain!

I've had a lateral sesamoidectomy three months ago (for a fractured and avascular lateral sesamoid). I would say that the surgery has been very successful. I had intense pain before the surgery and now I am even able to jog without pain. They say it could take 6 months to a year before you feel really good about it. I'm not using an orthotic because I am able to walk normally with sneakers on. I also found that inline skating is a wonderful way to get some cardiovascular exercise when you are recovering from a lateral sesamoidectomy (it doesn't hurt at all when I skate for fitness). goaustin, Austin, TX. Re: Re: lateral sesamoidectomyThe rsik is that the big toe may start to turn because the joint is destabilized slightly. However, most people are relieved completely by the surgery when performed for the appropriate reason. Recovery is relatively fast sice the no bones have to heal. However, you will have to be off your feet for about 3 weeks while the skin heals. After that, you can start to return to regular activity slowly without overdoing it. Six months is really the absolute longest it should take and two months is normally sufficient for complete recovery.
