long term sesmoid fx

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue Aug 27, 2002 7:18 pm

My medial sesmoid was fractured in an accident last Dec, after walking cast for months, orthotics etc xray shows part of bone did not heal. Question is this. I am an emergency worker, search/rescue, enforcement, etc. I can walk about 8 miles and jog very slowly .75 miles, but limp and have pain for several days after exercise. Have some pain if I stand for very long. Have a fairly high pain tolerance. Is it worth it to consider surgery to try and regain abilities. I used to run 5-6 miles, walk 12 miles w pack. I can't push off w/ any lateral movement and need to be able to do more for my job but don't want to riskj not be able to walk.

Removing the sesamoid should help tremendously. Also, very few people who have a sesamoid removed due to pain actually get worse pain after surgery. Therefore, this is an excellent option. Furthermore, the doctor may be able to only remove part of the sesamoid and leave the rest intact so the joint is not affected.
