pain in big toeI am 45 years old. For the past several weeks I've had pain in my big toe -- the pain feels like it is focused on the top of the toe, radiating from the first toe joint upwards. The pain is mostly a persistent ache, though it becomes severe if I put lots of weight on it, like when changing direction after planting the foot. (Interestingly, the toe does not hurt while I run forward, as when jogging. But it is sore after I finish.) There is no obvious swelling in the toe, and I have no pain in the ball of my foot. When I press around the toe to see if there is a specific area of pain or soreness I can't really find one. Any thoughts about what the problem might be? Many thanks!
Re: pain in big toeYou probably have a condition known as hallux limitus. This occurs when the big toe starts to get arthritis in it and cannot move through a full range of motion. Instead, the joint ends up jamming and causing a dull, aching pain which is the start of arthritis. You should see a podiatrist in order to be properly diagnosed and to prevent future joint damage.
