post lateral sesamoidectomy careDear Podiatrist:
I had my lateral sesamoid removed from my right foot three months ago and the recovery has been very good so far. My doctor hasn't prescribed any physical therapy expect suggesting that I stretch the big toe back and forth (within the pain range) to regain my range of motion. I am not using any orthotic because I am able to walk comfortably and pretty normally in sneakers. Is it necessary to go to a physical therapist for this kind of surgery? And is it necessary to use an orthotic if I'm not wearing sneakers (I have some difficulty when walking in sandals or boots)? And finally, is it possible at all to return to a sport like triple jump, where there's significant impact on the ball of the foot? goaustin.

You should wear the orthotics in your boots but it would be difficult to wear in sandals. You may be able to return to high jumping in a couple of months. However, this would be a gradual return and I would not push it.
