Potential sesamoid fracture advice and running...

Post a new topicby VARunner on Fri Nov 13, 2009 4:07 pm

Hi! I'm a 39 year old with an injury that is keeping me from running. :( About 3 1/2 weeks ago, I fell down the stairs and landed at the concrete landing on my toe (not sure which direction it hyperextended because it happened too fast).

I had an x-ray the day after and 1 week later which both showed no fractures. After 3 1/2 weeks (one in a boot/cast), I was not feeling any better. A podiatrist did the x-ray again and thinks he sees something suspicious as far as a sesamoid fracture, but is sending me for a bone scan to confirm or deny.

I'm trying to remain hopeful that this is not broken because I've already had 25 days of no running and it's killing me! If it really was broken, wouldn't it be easier to see or at least have been suspected in the first 2 x-rays? If it is broken, it must be pretty acute, right? I'm really trying to look for a silver lining here or any ray of hope that it's not going to be an "end of running" type injury.

Thanks!
