sesamoidSept 2001 i was diagnosed with a stress fracture and wore a hard sole shoe for 2months but did not stop working as a massage therapist. The pain seemed to be gone but may 2002 i am still in pain and started walking on the outer side of the foot to avoid pain. An mri is not sure it is a fracture sesamoid or bipartite. I did a bone scan today and waiting for result. I feel very confused as all the different specialists i have seen seem to have a different opinion. Some want to remove it like if it was nothing serious, some want to put magnet on my foot! and other are very cautious and scare of surgery! HELP Could a cast heal it after so long or am i dreaming and surgery is the only way to go? If i do go for surgery, can some people tell me their recovery experience. Thanks so much to help, i am so confused!
Re: sesamoidA cast will probably not help at this point. Surgery is a reasonable option and most patients do very well after this type of surgery or o one would ever do it. You will read horror stories but a painful sesamoid makes it almost impossible to walk. However, before getting the surgery, ask about a cortisone shot to the area. This can tremendously help and may prevent the need for surgery. Have a nice day and please write back if you have any further questions.
