SesamoiditisGood day to you. My daughter Nathalie, has been diagnosed with sesamoiditis in October last year. She has has orthodics made and rested her feet but nothing has really changed. About 4 weeks ago, we had her foot put into a cast (she has the sesamoiditis in both feet but alot worse in right foot) and at the moment only the right foot is in cast. The worrying part is that even after 4 weeks there does not seem to be an improvement in the redness and sensitivity when its touched. She is using a wheelchair and cruthes to cut down on any pressure on either of her feet. Has there been cases that sesamoiditis has been cured and what % ? It is very worrying as she is only 18 years of age. She has had x-rays and a ultrascan - no fractures. she has been recovering from anorexia for the last year. She is very distressed about this as she had to give up her job and just stays at home because she can use her feet. All she wants to know is if sesamoiditis is currable as after 5 months and alot of effort - nothing seems to have changed. Is there an alternative to cortosone? does cortosone not just treat the symptom and not the cause?
I've also been told to use Vit B12 which she has been doing for the past 4 months. Your answers will be sooooo much appreciated. Thank you for your time. Regards Jackie Mills (mother)
Re: SesamoiditisSesamoiditis is very curable especially if the sesamoids are not fractured. Cortisone injections can be extremely helpful. In many instances, sesmoiditis becomes a cycle of inflammation causing more irriatation. Cortisone can break this cycle. Also, if the area is red and painful to the touch, there may be a secondary problem like a bursa or ganglion in the area. Finally, the joint is going to be painful because it has not been moved very much in the past few months. Therefore, physical therapy can also be very helpful in relieving pain and increasing range of motion in the area. Please let your daughter know that although sesamoiditis can be frustrating, the fact that she does not have a fracture is a very good sign and it can almost always be cured. Have a nice day and please write back if you have any further questions.
