Showgirl with fractured sesamoid!

Post a new topicby showgirl on Thu May 22, 2008 12:54 am

Hi I am a showgirl in Las Vegas as well as a cocktail waitress. I fractured my lateral sesamoid two months ago. I have been in a walking cast (or boot) for 8 weeks now. At my 8 week check-up the doctor took another x-ray to see how the fracture had healed. He discovered that the fracture had not healed at all. My lateral sesamoid is still in two pieces, or a non-union as the podiatrist put it. I can walk on my foot flat and briefly in heels with minor pain. My problem is because I am a dancer I use the ball of my foot alot. I cannot put all my weight on it to turn or to go on releve, and jumping on it is out of the question. I am only 24 and in great physical shape. I am very active not only as a dancer but with other sports and working out. I am concerned that I will not be able to dance anymore. My doctor said I could have the surgery to remove the broken bone, but I am terrified at the thought. Are there any dancers out there that have gone through this?? Are there any doctors with success stories about operating or not operating on dancers or athletes? I am desperately seeking help and advice! Anything will help. Thank you!!!

Hi, I'm a dancer in a similar situation. I haven't gone to the doctor yet but am sure that it's my lateral sessmoid that is injured. How are you? Do you have any advice? What should I do? I'm working in Atlantic city and am in the middle of a show... I know you must know how scary something like this is as a dancer so please let me know if you have any advice, thank you so much

Hope I can help. I am not a dancer but like you I am very active being in the military. I broke my lateral sesamoid by running. I have had problems since 2005 till now. As far as the surgery goes If I were you please do some more research. I have had 4 surgeries. I am missing my far right sesamoid and had a planning on the outer sesamoid of my right foot. The other two surgeries for cutting the nerves that were inflamed and causing me more pain than the actual break of the bone. Please seek a doctor that knows what he or she is doing. After the surgeries I almost lost my military career. At this moment I am getting Ethanol shots to kill the nerve that is located on the outer left side of my right foot. These shot are very painful. I went with this option because if I were to have another surgery I would have been discharge from the military. As of right now the shots are working and I am up and running around. I have mild pain still but It is something I can deal with and hopefully stay in the military. If you go for the surgery you are going to be down for a min of 30 days just to recover and not be able to walk on it for another month or so depending on the doctor. Custom inserts work and relieve some of the pain as well. I can not stress enough to seek a doctor that knows the situation you are in. In my case I will forever be in pain and as told to me it will get worse as I get older because I have had 4 surgeries. Hope this helps you out on your decision. P.S Surgery should be you very last option.
