Surgery to removesesamoid bone

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue Sep 18, 2001 3:25 pm

I am scheduled to have my one and only sesamoid removed under the 1st.metatarsal(big toe)and am having difficulty getting answers to questions. Last summer I had metatarsal surgery for the 1st., third and fifth where they made a "v" in the bones. As a result my big toe stands up and goes towards my foot, which was not there prior to surgery. My doctor said it was, scare tissue, lesions, and me favoring the foot. Until I complained it was getting worse. I am now unable to wear normal low shoes and must now wear shoes with a minimum of 1 1/2" heel! Anyways I cannot get answers as to what will happen to my foot if this last sesamoid bone in removed. A second opinion told me to live with it or get it cut off. From reading your information, it appears I am sadly lacking appropriate information to make a wise decision. Please help!!!
I look forward to hearing from you and I thank you in advance for your time and opinion.

If the sesamoid bone is not causing you pain, I would leave it alone. The complication you mention is a possibility when bone angles get shifted after surgery. Certain muscles overpower others leading to certain changes like your toe pointing upwards. Once again, removing the seamoid will not help this aspect unless you are having pain in the seamoid area. There are surgeries to correct these muscle imbalances and if everything else fails, the joint can be fused so that it is straight and functional. Therefore, please write back if you have any other questions about your situation.
