Metatarsal bone lossSince the original posting on June 9, I have been back to my family physician three times, I have had X-rays of my foot and ankle, and finally, yesterday, July 19, I got to see a Podiatrist He says that I have Pronation of the foot affected. The description he gave me of what is happening fits closely with an observation that was made many years ago. That is, my shoes always wore down on the inside of my feet - which would indicate that this has been a problem brewing for many years. I have been measured for a custom-made arch support which will hopefully be available within two weeks. Until then, he suggested that I not go back to walking great distances as it will only aggravate the existing problem. What types of exercise would you recommend once I am wearing the fitted arch supports? Thank you for any advice you can add

Metatarsal bone lossBones do not just disappear. There has to be a reason like trauma or an infection. Therefore, you may want to ask your doctor to be more specific as to what he means by "gone." If the bones have decreased in density, then there are ways like strength training and calcium supplements that can help. However, make sure you know what your medical diagnosis is and feel free to write back once you know that information. Have a nice day.
I was informed by a health care worker that my metatarsal bone is "gone". It was suggested that I use an orthotic over-the-counter rigid arch support for two weeks to see if there is any improvement. Also, the blood vessels on the inside of my foot bulge out when I walk so compression socks were also advised. Is there anything I can do to strengthen or bring back the metatarsal bone? Will this mean that I will no longer be able to walk barefoot on the sand when we are at the beach? What alternatives in exercise and/or treatment could I look at? I have been involved with strength training equipment for over a year to increase the bone density in my spine. Is there equipment designed to do the same for the feet? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Patricia
Re: Metatarsal bone lossPatricia: My daughter suffers from severe flat feet. I would be most interested to know if you have found any excerises to help your condition. She also wears custom-orthodics, but right now I'm searching for a new podiatrist. Would appreciate knowing what you found out. Thanks!
