***needs help with tarsal tunnel***

Post a new topicby phatbunny626 on Mon Jan 05, 2009 1:38 pm

It has been 5 months since I have been diagnosed with tarsal tunnel syndrome I have had such a hard time dealing with the pain. I have the sharpest pains in my right inner ankle. For a few months now it hasn't hurt that bad. I need help with what to do about the pain. Someone told me that epsom salt doesn't really help, what about shoes? What kinds of shoes are helpful to wear in this condition? What kinds of soak aids are everyone else using? Please help. I'm only 22 and on my feet alot.

first let me start with a brief definition of the diagnosis= tarsal tunnel syndrome...pressure on the nerve in the area of the inside of the ankle that produces pain that either radiates toward the ankle/leg, or more commonly away from the ankle toward the foot/toes...common causes are pronation/flat foot or collapsing arch, trauma, or a pathological abnormality...most TT that i see are active patients with pronation...the typical treatment options are: nsaids, PT, orthotics, & surgery if all else fails...i do not recommend attempting steroid injections...a nerve conduction velocity test is a must for complete and accurate diagnosis...an MRI may facilitate additional pathology evaluations...i have seen ganglions. and soft tissue masses in the sheath of the TT that were only ID'ed by MRI...in the meantime, rest, ice, and mild compression may be of temporary help with a good nsaid such as etodolac xl 600...i hope this helps...

no soaking aids that are effective even for the short term...a topical i have had recent positive patient reports for is voltaren gel...look it up on-line...my common shoe recommendations are either New Balance cross trainer model 622 for sports style gear or a Merrell shoe for more dress and casual, i believe they are made in california...again look on the web...other than a northwest lab prescription orthotic acquired thru a docs office, a good trial device is a Sorbothane insole...again look on the web...they have 9-10 models...all are outstanding in quality and pricing...do not accept a knock off or other sub...good luck...
