tarsal tunnel syndrome

Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Jun 16, 2002 7:20 am

I have a question please.

I had a bad fall in 11/2000. I fell 6 and 1/2 feet into an uncovered drainage ditch. the doctors never found any broken bones hoever i was experiencing so much pain, like electric shocks in my heel area that i went to my own doctor who sent me to an orthopedic. the ortopedic had every test done, mri bone scan, etc and found that i had suffered calcaneous fracture in my foot that was never detected. I also had an emg which showed lesser activity in the right foot. while waiting to see the foot specialist i was referred to my foot started to swell and the electric shocks now were happening in the top of the foot also. i also noice a lump on the top of the foot that almost seems to be filled with fluid when i press down on it. i have these shocks and tingling whether i am sitting or standing and the swelling increases as the day goes on. this new doctor had prescibed this drug called neurotrin. hen i checked this out on the web it says that this drug if for epilepsy can you tell me if i should be taking this for my condition?

thank you in advance for your help.

It sounds like you have a couple of conditions occurring. First, the bump sounds like a ganglion and it may be pressing down on a nerve on the top of your foot. Therefore, you may want to have the ganglion removed and this could relieve the pain on the top of your foot. The fractured calcaneus is another problem. You may have arthritis in the joint since it was never fixed properly. Therefore, you should ask about this as well. There is also a nerve under your calacaneus that could have been damaged. Neurontin is a good drug for nerve pain and is used for many things besides epilepsy. However, it is not a cure to your pain. Therefore, you should discuss options with your doctor for a cure rather than masking the pain. Have a nice day and please write back if you have any further questions.
